In a world that often equates success with financial gain, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters. As difference makers, we’re driven by a passion for inspiring, empowering, and transforming lives. Yet, the pressure to generate immediate returns can leave us feeling creatively stifled and disconnected from our core purpose.
The philosopher Alan Watts once said, “The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.” With these words, Watts invites us to question the very nature of success and to consider the impact we have on the world around us.
The Limitations of Traditional ROI Thinking
When we focus solely on financial metrics, we risk sacrificing our creativity and authentic voice. We become consumed by the pursuit of quick profits, often at the expense of our values and the depth of our impact. As a result, our work loses its soul, and we find ourselves drifting further away from our true calling.
Introducing Ripples of Influence
What if we shifted our perspective and began measuring success by the “ripples of influence” our actions generate? Like a pebble dropped into a still pond, each interaction, each piece of content, and each client success story sends out ripples that touch countless lives beyond our immediate sphere.
Understanding Ripples of Influence:
A heartfelt testimonial from a client who, thanks to your guidance, found the courage to pursue their dreams.
An inspiring social media post that sparks a conversation and encourages others to take action.
A mentoring session that empowers a fellow difference maker to overcome self-doubt and unleash their potential.
These ripples of influence may not always translate into immediate financial gains, but they contribute to a legacy of transformation and impact that far outlasts any single transaction.
The “Be a Blessing” Approach
Consider adopting a “be a blessing” mindset to amplify your ripples of influence. This approach involves sharing your work openly and generously, inviting others to learn from your successes and challenges in real time.
Here’s how you can start implementing this approach today:
1. Share Your Process: To inspire and educate others, document and share your creative journey, including the ups and downs.
2. Lead With Value: Provide free resources, tutorials, or workshops that showcase your expertise and genuinely help your audience.
3. Collaborate Openly: Seek opportunities to collaborate with other difference makers, fostering a spirit of generosity and mutual support.
Beyond Protecting IP
Embracing the “be a blessing” approach requires a shift away from the scarcity mindset that often surrounds intellectual property. Rather than fiercely guarding your knowledge, trust that your unique perspective and delivery are what truly set you apart.
As the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki said, “In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s, there are few.” By sharing your work openly, you cultivate a beginner’s mind, remaining open to new ideas and connections that can enrich your journey and the lives of those you touch.

Case Study: My Journey as a Coach
In my journey as a coach, I’ve experienced firsthand the power of openly sharing my process and the tools I use to help clients achieve their goals. Through my Substack, free workshops for my community and subscribers, and my books, I’ve demonstrated my authority and expertise in a way that resonates with my audience.
By sharing my knowledge and insights, I’ve not only encouraged clients to share the transformative results they experience but also leveraged the power of networks. As clients’ connections witness their growth and success, they, too, are inspired to embark on their journeys of change.
This ripple effect has led to a growing community of individuals eager to learn, grow, and support one another. It’s a testament to the idea that when we focus on being a blessing to others, we create a legacy that extends far beyond our immediate sphere of influence.
Conclusion: Measuring Success with New Metrics
As difference makers, it’s time to redefine success on our terms. Rather than being solely driven by financial metrics, let us embrace the power of ripples of influence. By generously sharing our work, collaborating openly, and focusing on the lives we touch, we can create a legacy that endures.
In the words of Mother Teresa, “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” Every action, no matter how small, has the potential to create ripples of change.
So, reflect on ripples of influence. How can we shift our perspective and align our work with our deepest values and aspirations? How can we be a blessing to those around us and, in doing so, experience a more fulfilling and impactful journey?
Remember, true success lies not just in the money we make but in the difference we make. Embrace your ripples of influence, and let your work be a beacon of light in the world.

A few weeks ago we were talking about themes in our writings. You talked about the Mother Teresa quote in saying that doing something small to help others, can create ripples that impact others in unexpected ways. Also in the ocean theme, I was also just talking about Blue Ocean Marketing (Kim & Mauborgne, 2015). By utilizing this theory, of Be a Blessing Marketing, you are basically operating in a blue ocean or creating a blue ocean because it is not about stepping on competitors, it's about growing together. Interesting!
